Argentina Wine Tasting Regions

Argentina has grown to become one of the most important wine-producing countries in the world and the largest producer of wine in South America. The high-altitude deserts of the eastern Andes have given rise to a high-quality wine industry, and the grape growing conditions are perfectly suited to the Malbec grape variety.

There are three major wine provinces that include Mendoza, Salta and Catamarca.

Mendoza

Mendoza is the largest of the three major wine regions in Argentina and is located at the edge of the Andes Mountains, and the province produces around 70% of the countries wine production, most famously Malbec.

The success of the Mendoza wine production is due in small part to its altitude, sitting about 1,200m above sea level. The altitude is extremely important to the growing conditions as it helps moderate temperatures that slows the ripening process and contributes to the rich flavours.

Salta

The vineyards in Salta are extreme, located in the mountainous region of north Argentina and the highest reaching upwards of 3,000m above sea level. As well as having some of the highest vineyards in the world, it is balanced by also having some of the lowest.

The top performing grape varieties in Salta are the Torrontes and Melbec.

Catamarca

Catamarca is in the northwest of Argentina and is shadowed by the vast Andes mountain range. The mountains provide a constant supply of melted snow via the Abaucan river. This fortunate circumstance allows for a good level of control over the growth of the vines by generating smaller yields and higher concentration of flavours, achieved by limited the supply of water.

The main varieties of grape in the Catamarca province are Torrentes and Malbec.
